Luxury Scented Candles: Reviews and Buying Tips

Around this time of year, our house is filled with scented candles. I love making our home cosy and fragrant whilst masking the smell of the spicy food we cook regularly. Needless to say, over the years, I've built a reasonable amount of experience around sniffing out not just a great candle but also a really good deal. I've also learnt that you often get what you pay for but not always; there are a few really good but accessibly priced candles out there.  Also, whilst I am partial to natural wax and organic fragrance, this doesn't always result in a great scent.

Cire Trudon: I might as well start with a true luxe candle and my current absolute favourite.  Cire Trudon is possibly the oldest luxury candle maker in the world. I've waited a long time to make this splurge and the recent Selfridges sale was a good excuse. I've read mixed reviews of Cire Trudon so I really wasn't keen on simply 'burning' my hard earned money on a candle that fails to deliver.  The Cire Trudon website lists the fragrance notes in the candle to give you a sense of what to expect. After my online research I was mulling over Spiritus Sancti and Carmelite. I ended up buying Bartolome and it is *divine*! It reminds me of Christmas mass from my childhood in India with its sweet smell of frankincense along with notes of vanilla and vetiver. It is a very comforting smell that quick permeates the room.  It smells wonderful even when unlit. Whilst I cannot claim experience with many more Cire Trudon numbers, this one is most certainly the best candle I've ever tried.

Diptyque: I've been a long time fan for Diptyque because of their great fragrances as well their fashionable containers. However, not all my purchases have been that great. For example, I simply hated the very popular Figuier  candle. However, Baies, Noisetier and Feu De Bois are super fragrances ( in my opinion) and will continue to be popular choices for my home. Diptyque candles generally have good 'throw' and make stylish containers once they are finished. I usually tend to source mine from the Liberty of London sale or in the Selfridges sale.

Rituals: I like the Rituals brand a lot. They are non-flashy and make really good quality, luxurious products at accessible prices. Their Spring Garden candle is a favourite and I had high hopes for the Under the Fig Tree Autumn/Winter candle. However, I was terribly disappointed as it smelt of nothing all the away till the end. I even ask my husband and friends if they could smell it ( just in case my nose was playing up) and they confirmed it smelt of nothing. So, give that one a miss but worth giving the other fragrances in the brand a try.

Jonathan Ward: I discovered Jonathan Ward though a combination of TK Maxx and Achica. The reviews were excellent and they use really good natural products. The containers are beautiful too. I bought Katryusha and Gypsy from the Russia collection, Kiss in Rio and Santissimi Amalfi. Whilst they are all very nice scents in their own right and last well and quickly permeate the rooms they are burning in, the fragrances are rather masculine. I don't mind them in small doses but not something I'd want to burn for too long. However, if you like musky, woody scents, this is well worth trying.

True Grace: My first True Grace candle was an impulse purchase Manchester Trafford Centre. It was called Sacristy and evoked a sentiment similar to that of Cire Trudon's Bartolomeo. It was a beautiful fragrance but not very powerful. It would work in a small cosy room but not necessarily effective in large spaces. That said, I think the candles are reasonable priced and worth checking out. John Lewis stocks them too and it is worth stalking them in the sales.

Neom: I really like the idea of Neom. It is all nastiness free and apparently mood-uplifting. It also makes your home smell like a spa. The latter is not always a good thing. I don't mind an 'oily' smell whilst in a spa but I prefer fresher or richer scents for my home. I have tried Inspiration, Restore and Serenity. I *hated* Inspiration but quite like the subtler scents of Restore and Serenity. Thankfully I paid less than half price so I didn't mind the experimentation too much. If you are a fan of spa scents, this is the candle brand for you. Achica does great Neom sales so keep your eyes peeled.

White Company:  I like the airy, minimalistic aesthetic of White Company. I've tried two of their home fragrances and they were both, in keeping with the brands' style, fresh and beautiful. Compared to the likes of Cire Trudon and Diptyque, they are much more accessibly priced. My only disappointment was that they simply didn't last. I used to burn the candles for about an hour a day and they only lasted a couple of weeks. That is about half the recommended lifetime for the candle. Otherwise, they make lovely fresh scents at accessible prices (especially if you buy in the sale).

To wrap up, here are a few tips on candle buying based on my personal experience.
1. If you fancy a certain type of candle, always do your research and read reviews online in advance. I usually look to makeup alley.com and blogs for reviews. This doesn't always work  as people's perception of scents does often vary but it does help you avoid big mistakes.
2. Go to a shop that stocks them and have a smell.  Do this more than once if you are looking to splurge a little. I have found that my perception of smells sometimes differs depending on the time of day and my own mood.
3. The best deals are usually online and the best sales I find are Harrods, Selfridges and Space NK. The best times for these are around the time of the Boxing Day and Spring sales. Harrods and Selfridges release codes a few weeks before Christmas that work on most brands  If you can't be bothered waiting, have a look on Achica, TK Maxx and Secret Sales for flash sales.

Merry Christmas and happy candle buying in the sales! Ann x

Update on Michael

Please continue to pray for Michael.  He is still a very sick young man; still in ICU on the ventilator; still needing so very much healing in his lungs and body.  On Tuesday he started having a lot more pain (this from someone who has had constant pain and needing pain meds for the past month) so finally they did a CT scan yesterday and found that his feeding tube had become disconnected which meant that his food wasn't going to his stomach!  They did emergency surgery to correct the problem.    Also pray for my sister, Ruth, his mother who has spent everyday for the past month in the hospital with Michael leaving only for the night (when he is stable) and sometimes to go out to eat with friends or for a walk.

Pan Seared Scallops

If you haven't already guessed, I'm a massive seafood fan.  Our fishmonger friend was passing by us en-route from Billingsgate and it was a perfect opportunity to get some great quality, fresh seafood. His bag of goodies included lots and lots of oysters, mackerel, sardines, mussels and giant scallops.

With great quality seafood, sometimes the best you can do is very little. I decided to serve the scallops pan-seared as a starter to our meal that evening.

I patted the scallops dried and set them aside, ready to fry. I walked out into our little garden and plucked some gorgeous smelling basil. I then set the frying pan on high, added 3 teaspoons of olive oil, a pinch of chilli powder and some salt. To this I added the basil. After a minute, with the pan searing hot, I added the scallop. I cooked them for about 2 minutes each side and then served them hot. The result is as in my little photo! I hope you try some scallops too :) Ann x

Singing Again

We had a lovely time at this outdoor concert in Chassel, Michigan.
We were in a pavilion with the lakes in the background and it was beautiful.

World's Largest Chocolate Fountain//Anchorage

We had a little spare time on our way from Anchorage to Homer two weeks ago, so we stopped by to see the world's largest chocolate fountain. =)
As is typical, most of us ended up crowded around the book display. =)

Becky's Sister/Mother Reunion in May

DESTINATION:  A lovely, serenely beautiful home in Walnut Creek, OH.
REASON:  TO celebrate life with 5 of my sisters, 1 sister-in-law, and my dear mother.  (1 sister-in-law and 1 sister were not there.)

On May 16, I (Becky) and some relatives who needed a ride to OH got in my van about the time the sun was making its appearance.  We made a quick stop in Goshen, IN to pick up my sister-in-law and continued on our 12 hour drive.  This included gas stops, an hour traffic delay, etc.  We spent Thursday evening, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning enjoying life together by eating too much cheesecake, lovely salads, and lots of chocolate; laughing until we cried; talking for hours on end about anything & everything from relationships, memories, food, and other various topics; crotcheting & knitting; walking & hiking; visiting a coffee shop; eating out at a most unique & beautiful Bistro; shopping, shopping, & shopping; singing hymns; touring the amazing "P Graham Dunn" factory, getting VERY lost while driving around the hilly Holmes County crountryside in a 15 passenger van (yes, I was driving BUT I was only going where some dear family member was telling me to go, okay??); and enjoying 1-2 hour long meals around a small kitchen table while eating (DRUM ROLL, please) mostly salad, cheesecake, and chocolate.

Here is the story on the cheesecake.  We wanted this weekend to be relaxed without spending too much of our dear husbands hard earned money so we each brought food.  We didn't plan for desserts since it was only a minor detail; so long story short - 3 of us brought cheesecakes!  They were incredibly  scrumptious and since we ate mostly salads &  dark chocolate which are both loaded with many and various vitamins and are low calorie foods, they were not very detrimental to one's waist line.  Besides, this WAS a vacation and one should not think TOO much about food on a vacation, right?

It was definitely a weekend to remember.  We concluded our  weekend by watching a sermon and eating lunch together.  I'm so grateful for my family and their commitment to God and each other.

Watch Night Service||The Boys Preaching

Our church had a "Watch Night Service" on New Year's Eve.  It was a wonderful time of encouragement and fellowship, beginning with a service where 8 young men preached, then a meal, and ending with fun and fellowship at a local gym.
Here are photos/recaps of my brothers' sermons that evening.
"Evangelism"
Using the example of Esther (Esther 4:10-5:2), Mitchell gave us a stirring call to evangelism.  I believe all Christians need to be reminded of the call we have to share the precious news of the Gospel.  Mitchell has such a heart of love for others, and it is a privilege to learn from him on this topic.
"Having good conversation"
Carson is one of the best conversationalists I know.  But that is for a reason; he is passionate about honoring Christ with his words.  He based his sermon off I Timothy 4:12, and is was such a great reminder to seek to edify others and honor Jesus Christ in our conversation.
"Living up to God's blessings"
Denver reminded us of all God's blessings to us and gave practical admonitions on how we should live in light of those blessings.  (Ephesians chapters 1, 2, and 3)  If we have been blessed by the Lord, we should be grateful and seek to glorify Him.  I love how Denver lives this out in everyday life; he is one of the most grateful people I know, and he has such a heart to honor Jesus with his life.
"Reason's for Rejoicing"
Josh encouraged all of us with his message on joy.  He challenged us that, as Christians, Christ has given us so many reasons for rejoicing, and we should be the most joyful people in the world.  Philipians 4:4 says, "Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, rejoice."

London Fashion Week AW13: Orla Kiely

I once came across my mother-in-law's school photo from the 60's and  fell in love with it. It was a black & white official school photo of a girls only class where they all had either a fabulous back-combed up-do or a swish bob. It was très chic. It was so different to the bland school photos of my generation. MIL is the shy private types and would not have any of my "I'd like to copy it and frame if please". And I let it go. Zoom back to a week ago, I had the same expression on my face as had when I first saw that photo and felt the same awe as I knelt on the floor watching and photographing the Orla Kiely A/W13 collection at London Fashion Week. Amongst the countless astute media  narratives of the presentation, and references to Margot Tenenbaum and chubby coats et.al., the best I can muster was a 'oh so pretty! I want it all!'. The presentation, which centred around a 60's typing pool, was all about vintage office girl chic.

The Orla Kiely presentation was the bit I was most excited about at London Fashion Week. Having read accounts of her previous ones, my expectations were sky high. I was not disappointed. The icing on the cake was Orla's unassuming presence in the room. Following my Mawi cringe-fest, my grown-up self should have learnt how to pitch myself better. The reality was far from it, I was completely star-struck. I blurted something along the lines of "Hi Orla, I'm a big fan I love your work. Can I take your photo please?" Orla was lovely ( and kind?) and said she looked awful and that she had no make-up on and went on to say she'd send me a photo. Then she has for my card. In my little head, I had arrived. Even though she quite possibly added mine to a pile of others filed under 'sad bloggers'. Next year, I'll make intelligent conversation, I promise myself.

I'll leave you with some of my photos from the day. Let me know what you make of the collection. Ann x

Fashionable Travel Treasures: Cos I Love the Ugandan Bag

I'm liking my travel fashion series. It is making me think about and dig out those little gems in my wardrobe from my many travel adventures. I am a bag lady. Being a bag lady does come with its many conundrums-one of them being the under-use of beautiful bags. My little bag from Uganda is one of those under-used babies. This bag was a gift from my Uncle and Aunt in Uganda whilst we were out there. It is handmade by the local women from locally sourced products. It has a unique shape and it is beautifully made. It is the kind of bag that, with a bit of thought, will take you from a day in the office to drinks at night. You can buy similar bags (with a bit of patience) on eBay and online African stores for less than $50.

I've teamed my lovely Ugandan bag with another favourite from Cos, the yellow straight cut dress. I adore its androgynous cut. The fabric is a lovely and thick and it washed really well. A lot of Cos dresses are trans-seasonal or can become trans-seasonal with clever pairing.

And when I don this outfit, I dream of lush green forests, crossing the equator, perfectly temperate weather, sipping Amarula cocktails and all the loveliness of Uganda.

Have you got an under-used  fashion accessory from your travels too? Ann x

Its Actually Cerulean

"This... 'stuff''? Oh, OK. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select, I don't know... that lumpy blue sweater, for instance. Because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue. It's not turquoise. It's not lapis. It's actually cerulean. And, you're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent wasn't it who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here... And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, oh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of 'stuff' "

I've watched 'The Devil Wears Prada' far too many times to know the above lines too well. It seemed only right that when I wore this lovely cerulean Philip Lim 3.1 skirt ( picked in the Outnet Sale ), I had to play back Miranda Priestly's famous words. I've teamed the skirt with my *favourite* Margiela for H&M Candy Clutch, a re-edition from Margiela's SS10 collection except £600ish cheaper! You can still find some on eBay but for slightly more than the £35 that I paid.  Also featured here is a Me & Zena pencil necklace that I recently picked up from London Fashion Weekend for a bargain. I love little geeky touches.  What do you make of the outfit? Would you wear cerulean?  Ann x
