Celebrating British & Quirky

July has been a great month by British standards. Firstly, we've had the most glorious weather (we will not complain about the heat!). Glorious weather also means an abundance of summertime bounty; all kinds of wonderful fruit and berries (unlike last year where our strawberry patch was drowned out). Then, we witnessed the action-packed sessions at Wimbledon and the Henley Regatta followed by the first British victory at Wimbledon in 70 years. To coincide with all this, my friend Shan gifted me a fabulous Union Jack sequined clutch for my birthday. It was as if the stars were beckoning me to write about about all things wonderfully British.

For me, the highlights of July included my first trip to Wimbledon (long hours of queuing after work on Day 1), truly indulging in summertime fashion (something I'd almost forgotten), making classic English desserts with a twist (Rhubarb Eton Mess with Edible Flowers) and shed loads of jam, making the most of the long daylight and lovely weekends with family and friends, spending time on our less than glorious allotment, wonderful fog-less views of London from my desk whilst down there and last but not the least, making the most of the best clothes dryer in the world-fresh air! I cannot describe how happy I am when I am able to do a pile of washing and then watch it air outside and dry almost instantly!

I've packed and vacuum bagged my winter wardrobe (jumpers included) and am feeling really good about it. My outfits of choice for this season include white cotton and linen dresses, mini maxi dresses and pretty sandals. I am particularly chuffed with my linen dress from Comptoirs Des Cotonniers via the trusty vente-privee.com; it is just right for long hot days at work or play. I'm also pleased to have brought out my little Manolo Blahniks (thrifted via eBay on a dark winter's day). Now don't quote me on this but apparently Carrie Bradshaw wore this same style of Manolos in the first season of Sex and the City.

Anyway, I'll love you and leave you with some of my views our own City on a gorgeous summers day. What have you enjoyed doing most this month? I'm all ears. Ann x

A Fyne Celebration: Loch Fyne Cairndow

Fashion Blogger Scotland Loch Fyne

It has taken me a while but I have now come to realise that birthdays are indeed to be celebrated. When I was younger, I detested the idea of getting older. I was most sensitive about my age in my early twenties. All that has now changed. I now realise that whilst I may not have perfect skin or be able to fit into the clothes I did back then, I am so much more. I have experienced so much life and thus grown as a person, I have been fortunate enough to travel widely, I have more money and I have developed many more friendships that I value. I also have a wonderful husband! And age is a state of mind. Anyway, this husband decided it would be a good idea to take me away to explore the Loch Fyne area for my birthday weekend. I've always loved the Loch Fyne chain ( and the Elton branch is still my all time favourite) and have for a long time wanted to visit the original restaurant. I finally got there last weekend and it was a delight.

Loch Fyne Drive

We stayed in the nearby Loch Long area as all decent hotels and B&Bs in Cairndow and Inveraray were fully booked. The drive from Arrochar to Loch Fyne through Argyll forest was stunning. We also stopped by to see some salmon fishing on Loch Fyne. There were spectacular waterfalls, little streams, ancient trees and so much greenery all along the thirty minute drive. The camera can never quite capture what the eye can see!

Salmon Fyne Loch Fyne

I also realised that I was perfectly coordinated to the colours of the Loch Fyne restaurant and my patent leather sky blue skirt was pretty much the same shade as the restaurant's blue. The restaurant faced Loch Fyne and had character. The deli attached to the restaurant sold fresh vegetables, dairy products and all kinds of seafood (obviously!). We chose the classic seafood platter for our main meal and it consisted of a variety of locally sourced oysters, mussels, crabs, cockles and other shellfish.
The original Loch Fyne

Sadly, we had to down the prosecco and skip dessert and rush off soon after we'd consumed the main course as there was the threat of yet another landslide nearby. The road between Arrochar was closed the previous night and that morning due to a torrential rain induced landslide. If that happened again, we would have to take an additional 100 mile detour to get back to Edinburgh (which did not sound like fun).  But I'm pleased we made it to the restaurant and I thoroughly enjoyed the meal.

Fashion Blogger Scotland Loch Fyne

I'd definitely recommend a trip to both the original Loch Fyne or one of the chain restuarants if you are a seafood fan like me.  It was a stunning area and there is so much around there to explore nearby.  In fact, I recommend highly a trip to Scotland. Ann x

Baked Alaska with Raspberry Coulis

I've not been doing well of late. I lost yet another baby this week in a painful and horrendous journey that started over a couple of years ago. Not many people talk about these things and women suffer in silence with little support. I am hoping this post a tiny step towards helping change that attitude. It is part of my little mission to lift the taboo on the awful subject of miscarriage. If you have suffered like me, it is worth checking out Sands. Anyway, what does all this have to do Baked Alaska?! Well, making the Baked Alaska whilst being bed-ridden with a threatened miscarriage was my way of maintaining sanity. I have a fantastic husband who meticulously followed my instructions and actually made this recipe. It also proves that it is dead simple to do, no offense to the husband.

Ingredients:
1 flan base or a thin sponge cake
500ml ice cream. Try and avoid the soft scoop versions as they melt quicker. I'd recommend something like Mackies Scottish
4 egg whites, I used Dr. Oetkers powdered egg whites to avoid any salmonella risk
250g icing sugar.
1 cup raspberry coulis

Method:
Pre-heat the oven to 230 deg C. Whisk egg whites until frothy and slowly add icing sugar. Whisk with an electric blender ( although you could do it manually I suppose) until the mixture is stiff and peaky. Now layer the ice cream on top of the sponge base. Cover the ice cream with raspberry coulis and then layer the meringue mixture on top and the sides. Stick this in the oven for 5-10 mins i.e. until the top has slightly browned. Stick this in the freezer for 10 mins and serve the strawberries or raspberries.  Simple!
Lessons Learnt: Now I believe using a blow torch instead of the oven has a much better effect and would make the whole process even quicker. Also in hindsight, making individual portions with smaller sponge bases may be easier or helps you decorate the meringue in pretty patterns.

P.S. Raspberry coulis recipe to follow

Land that I Love

Photo
This morning I pondered freedom, America, and the gratitude I have for all that I hold dear in this land.
I began to write in my journal:
"Today as I celebrate the birthday of this glorious country, I am grateful for freedom.
I think of its cost, knowing some gave everything.  I imagine being the one left behind as father or brother or husband would never return from the battlefield.  And yet, as I ponder liberty and its price, it saddens me to think how little so many of my country's citizens value liberty today.
May I never forget the blood, sweat, and tears that were given for this land that I love, for this freedom I hold so dear.  And   many I never forget the God who made this nation great.
It was upon His Word and Truth that my country was built, and it is only upon them that we can stand."
And I close with my favorite verse my country's grand and glorious national anthem:
"O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation.
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!"

Hakuna Matata, We're in Tanzania

We loved Tanzania from the minute we landed there. Perhaps it was our notion of the place or perhaps it was just  the better infrastructure compared to neighbouring Uganda. We hired a Land Cruiser with driver/guide for our 4 days in mainland Tanzania and while it was a tad expensive, it meant we did not have to rely on public or any other mode of transport. The journey from Kilimanjaro airport to our hotel in Karatu (close to Ngorongoro crater and Lake Manyara) took nearly 4 hours including a 30 min stop in Arusha. We stayed at the Bougainvillea Safari Lodge which was a lovely place and we had a little cottage to ourselves. The hotel was full board which meant limited meal choice but it was all very nice nevertheless.

The next morning we started early and it only took us about 15 mins to get to the Ngorongoro gate from where we started our descent into the crater area. This also marked the beginning of our wildlife spotting safari. The first creatures we met were loads of baboons and then some elephants. We stopped by at a couple of viewpoints to admire the amazing views of the crater and lake. The safari itself lasted about 5-6 hours, I can't be sure as we lost track of time. We saw loads of wildebeest, flamingos, lions, wild buffalo, a rhino, ostrich, zebras etc. It was magnificent to see all this animals out in the wild doing their business oblivious to the safari vehicles around them. We loved it. It was good for the soul. Towards mid-day, the lions got all hot and bothered and came to find shelter under our vehicles. We were within a couple feet of some of them and it was fantastic. The hotel had packed a picnic lunch for us and guide and we stopped by the hippo pool for a break. There were lots of kites in the sky so we decided not to venture out of the vehicle. Serengeti National Park is only a couple of hours away from Ngorongoro but we chose not to do it.

On our way back to the hotel we stopped by a Masai village. The Masai elders and the local government had reached an arrangement where tourists paid a fixed fee ($50 per vehicle) to visit the village and see how the locals lived and buy jewellery. We were treated to a welcome dance and my husband and I joined in for a bit although I had no idea what was going on. The chief's son ( mind you, the chief has 15 wives and so presumably many sons) showed us around the village, the cattle shed and we were invited inside one of the huts. The last bit did not enthuse me as I could see flies and insects swarming around. It took a couple of mins for our eyes to adjust to the darkness inside. We were asked to sit down inside the hut, which was smaller than a 3 man tent and already had two people sleeping in it. I felt a bit claustrophobic but fortunately we managed to get out soon enough. We were also taken to the kindergarten school they ran for the Masai kids and the children recited the English and Swahili alphabet for us. Some of them were barely 3 and we were impressed.

There were many jewellery stands and I've wanted a Masai necklace for a very long time. The bloke (chief's son) however refused to tell me price of anything and instead asked me to choose what I like. I settled down to one necklace in the end and he said it was $50. I was gobsmacked as I knew you could get the same thing in the shops for less than half that. He lowered it to $30 eventually but I didn't buy as I was disappointed by the attitude. I enjoy healthy haggling but considering we'd paid $50 to spend less than half an hour entry, I was hoping for a fairer price. What annoyed me more was that there did not seem to be a fair accounting system. This chief's son took the money directly and did not seem to give it to anyone, write down an account or anything of that nature. I wondered if it really went for the betterment of the village. or on drink I'd already heard many stories about Masai men doing bugger all  and drinking while the women worked hard.

The next day we spent a few hours on a safari round Lake Manyara. After Ngorongoro, it was a bit disappointing but nevertheless we did see several giraffe, elephants, hippos and birds. Later than evening we headed back to Arusha, stooping a couple of times to admire some giraffe near the road. We stayed at the Arusha Hotel in the centre of own and as I was keen on buying some kanga. Our guide pointed out to a few shops that were within walking distance of the hotel. While my husband was keen on having a look around I was uncomfortable. We decided to go out a bit later after freshening up. When we came down to the lobby, it was filled with smoke as the area outside had been tear gassed. There was political unrest and weather found out through the Internet that a few people had been killed in the firing. I'm so pleased we did not venture out earlier as we would have surely been caught in the midst of it all. After being holed up in our room for a bit we ventured down to the restaurant and nervously downed some ugali and chapatti, both local dishes. We were pleased to be leaving the next day.

We flew Precision Air to Dar and the flight was pleasant. We had a few hours between landing in Dar and flying out to Zanzibar and I was kanga quest again and our driver dropped us off near the town centre where there were some wholesale textile shops. These chaps did not sell in the small quantities that I was after and so pointed us to another Mama's shop through some back lanes. I was overjoyed at the sight of this tiny shop that had kangas and kitenges stocked top to bottom and outside. There was also a great choice and I bought a few pieces for $3 each. The tourists shops sold the same things for $25 and so I was well chuffed.

The plane that flew us to Zanzibar was tiny and I've never felt so vulnerable as when I was on the plane, right behind the cockpit, flying over the Indian Ocean. It only last 20 mins but I was bloody nervous. Zanizbar was not exactly like I'd imagined it to be. The airport is undoubtedly the worst I've ever flown from or to. We stayed at Amaan Bungalows on Nungwi beach which is about an hour from the airport but the journey was worth it. Nungwi beach is on the north coast of Zanzibar and is absolutely beautiful. We were hoping to go for an evening walk by the beach as its extremely hot during the day but unfortunately it was high tide. We did however spend a morning by the beach and it was fabulous. I also found it rather strange to see Masai blokes with ipods and shades hanging out by the beach. Besides being beach bums we also spent time in Stone Town admiring the architecture and the famous Zanzibar doors. We also paid a brief visit to Freddie Mercury's birthplace which is now a shop or so I'm told.

We were recommended a trip to do the dolphins in Kizimkazi but after hearing a fellow traveller version of the trip we were put off. Apparently motor keep chasing around these wild dolphins and so they only go further away. Duh! We spent a few hours on Prison Island which is 20 min boat ride from stone town on primitive motor boats. Our journey there was when the tide was coming in and the sea was very choppy and was a nightmare. The chap manning our tiny boat kept saying hakuna matata ('no problem') which we found was overused and rather annoying when heard 200 times a day. Prison Island is also home to Giant Tortoises which were originally from Seychelles. It was an interesting experience and apparently you can also go snorkeling round the waters here. They didn't seem clean enough to me and our guide had already told her stories about prisoners/ill people doing poos in the sea so I wasn't keen

Our flight back to Dar was OK but the wait at a mosquito plagues and overcrowded Zanzibar airport was horrific. I'd always imagined I'd prefer Zanzibar to Dar but no somehow I think Dar can be quite civilized. It also has a lot of history and we were treated with utmost warmth. We spent a night at the New Africa hotel where the staff were courteous, the pool was lovely and we were treated to a complimentary Indian Meal. Breakfast included vada sambar and that sealed the deal. We had a fabulous time in Tanzania but were now ready to come home.

Have you been to Tanzani? If yes, what were your best bits? Ann x

Guest Post: Make it. a New Clock...

My friends H & Sammy write a fabulous crafty blog called Live it Love it Make it. I'd highly recommend checking it out. They are a super creative duo and I am absolutely delighted to have them do a guest post on the blog. This DIY clock is one of kind, clever and so beautiful. Over to them to show you how its made and the story to go with it. Thank you guys! Ann x

A couple of weeks ago at work, H was over visiting and I was bemoaning the fact that I couldn't find a new clock that I liked for Sew Crafty. Our blue plastic 80's Argos special didn't seem to cut it after all the hard work we had done renovating the shop. As usual it was H to the rescue when she suggested that we made one! (yes she is an undiscovered genius) Here is how we went about it.

We took the old clock to bits, to use the hands and the mechanism. We removed the face and pulled the hands off, which freed up the back with the mechanism and battery pack up from the plastic surround.
H, Mum and I picked out some scraps from my bits and bobs drawers and got to work. Starting out by doing a little sketch of what things suited what materials. Some things like trimmings would curve but some things were better suited to the straighter numbers. We used a 12" embroidery hoop with calico stretched over it as a base.

I had this sewing machine brooch hanging around my desk for ages and I thought it would be a cute addition as our number 12

A reel of thread seemed obvious as our number 1 and ric-rac curved just enough to be no.2.
Number 3 was cut out of a fabric scrap, the same I used to cover the clock hands. For number 4 we used ribbon and No.5 was made with half of a broken zip.
Number 6 we cut from felt and no.7 was the end of a tape measure  (I had used the rest for a previous project)

For 8 I used a vanishing pen and used a coordinating thread and embroidered it in position, Number 9 was lovingly crocheted by my Mum from embroidery thread.

I knew I wanted to use a needle and thread at some point and number 10 seemed to fit really well, I used pinking shears to cut the 0 out of fabric and stitched it in place with a regular needle, then added the bigger needle afterwards to be the number 1. No. 11 was an excuse to use up some cute little buttons that I had been saving and they were the perfect colour.

I used glue to cover the hands in fabric, made a small hole in the calico and attached the mechanism to the back with strong HT2 glue. I used a small scrap to cover up the shadow from the black box that housed the clockworks and pushed the hands into place.
Doesn't it look cute! It is now hanging in its home above the 'care and repair' section by the pattern drawers in Sew Crafty.  It's so much nicer than any of the ones I saw in the shops and suits our little shop to a T.
